SEO: Best Practices

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a field with a myriad of techniques that can be applied. Listed below are important factors and techniques to consider and use.

Title Tags

Title tags are the first things you will see in any typical HTML file. A good title tag will always be context rich since many people use documents out of context. Not only will this benefit the user, but it will also work as a SEO function in identifying the HTML page for what it exactly is.

Meta Descriptions

The meta description tag is intented to be a brief and concise summary of your page’s content. Think of the Yahoo! directory. You see your site title followed by a brief description of your site or business. The meta description tag is designed to provide a brief description of your site which can be used by search engines or directories. As a rule of thumb, meta descriptions should not exceed 200 characters. Too little will deny users and directories the necessary specifications and too many will make the page not unique.

Meta Keywords

A meta keywords tag is supposed to be a brief and concise list of the most important themes of your page. When you write a meta keywords list, start by scanning the copy on your page. Make a list of the most important terms you see on the page. Then read through the list. Pick the 10 or 15 terms that most accurately describe the content of the page. Because of the hyper-competitiveness of the current search engine placement landscape, pages need to be very focused on one or two specific keyword phrases in order to have a chance to get a top ten placement.

SEO Friendly Headers

The way a website is formatted can have a large impact on its search engine optimization. SEO friendly headers are of paramount importance in any case. Header tags are a HTML standard preset to highlight information contained within the tags. Header tags are an alternative way of representing information in bold and in a larger font face. Typically, header tags are designed to highlight important information, paragraphs, news and other important data.

Writing for SEO

Believe it or not, the way a blog or a webpage is written has a huge impact on its SEO. Always be sure to include search terms in the title of any article or post that is written. Also, link important words to earlier posts. Search engines considers pages that have been linked to be of higher rank. Another similar technique is tagging. Be sure to tag as many relevant words as possible, but at the same time do not tag too many otherwise search engines will think that you are trying to tag unrelated topics just to get more traffic.

Search Engine Optimization(SEO): Before You Get Started

Search Engine Optimization. What is it? Chances are, if you have a website, you want people to know about. SEO does exactly that. SEO is simply a fancy or technical way of saying how to make your website popular.

Getting Started With SEO

Here are some tips to get you started on successful search engine optimization

Why SEO is important

First and foremost, if you want to practice something, you do so with good reason. So why apply SEO? Because you want as many people viewing your site as possible. But hardly anyone bothers to go through pages and pages of search results. Usually only the first page or two is what people look at when they use a search engine. SEO gets your website in the front.

Who will do your SEO

Typically anyone can do SEO or learn to do it. However, it is a tedious and specialized profession and is best left to those who are already well versed in SEO techniques. In-sourcing a SEO job to a current employee can be burdensome and cost inefficient.

Hiring a good SEO professional

As suggested, hiring a SEO professional is usually the best way to go. Naturally you want only the best working on you website. So who would for such a position? Signs of a good SEO professional include patience, sharp attention to detail, frequently self learns new techniques and technologies, and overall strong work ethic.

Learning to do SEO on your own

Hiring an SEO professional can be expensive or simply a budget you do not want to deal with. Luckily, with patience and practice, you or any employee can learn to be an asset through optimizing web pages.

Recommendations

Finding the right help and resources for SEO techniques and services can be difficult. To minimize usage in resources in finding the right help, limit your searches for SEO professionals to those who already have strong credentials. This means SEO professionals that can show you websites they have worked on that have high traffic and good pagerank. Additionally, finding a legitimate certification program for SEO can greatly increase budget efficiency if you or your company is not in a position to hire a SEO professional. Essentially, make sure your SEO professionals have a good resume and if you learn to do SEO on your own, make sure you do it the right way.
